OGGOgg (Vorbis or Opus)

A free audio format, common in video games and on the web, that usually holds Vorbis or Opus sound. Good quality at a small size, but it is less widely supported than MP3 on older devices. Formatomat writes the sound in it as Opus, or copies an original Vorbis or Opus track into it as it is.

Frequently asked questions

Are audio conversions really free?

Yes: no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The work happens on your device, so it costs us nothing in servers.

Are my files sent anywhere?

No. They are read and converted right in your browser. You can even go offline once the page has loaded: conversions you have used since the site’s last update keep working.

Is there a size limit?

A file’s size has no fixed limit: it depends on your device’s memory and on the browser. A few hundred MB work well on a recent computer. On a phone, stick to lighter files, especially for video. Most conversions read the whole file: beyond a certain size, often about 2 GB (less on a phone), the browser cannot read it in one block, and a message gives the file’s size.

A few caps still protect the browser’s memory, including: 1 GB of unpacked data for an archive or a Word, Excel, OpenDocument or EPUB file (512 MB on a phone and on some devices with little memory), 20,000 files per archive, 5 million filled cells per workbook, and 500 pages for a TIFF converted to PDF. A file over a cap is not converted, and a message says so.

Which browsers work?

The page is designed for recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Video conversion (MP4, WEBM, MOV, MKV) uses WebCodecs, a feature of Chrome and Edge and of recent versions of Safari and Firefox (except Firefox for Android, which does not have it yet). A conversion the browser cannot do is refused with a message that says so.
