HEIC to JPG: what to know

HEIC photos mostly cause trouble outside Apple’s world: copied to a Windows PC, sent as an attachment or uploaded to a site that only takes JPG. If a .MOV file with the same name sits next to the photo, it is usually the moving part of a Live Photo; the JPG keeps only the still image. Expect a larger file than the original too, since HEIC compresses more efficiently.

The JPG no longer carries the EXIF metadata: the date taken, the iPhone model and the GPS location are all dropped. That is reassuring when you post a photo without revealing where it was taken, less handy if your photo library sorts pictures by date. Recent versions of Safari read HEIC on their own; other browsers use a decoder that loads as soon as you add the first file. That decoder only reads 8-bit photos: a photo saved in 10 bits (by some cameras, or in HDR mode) is only converted if the browser reads it on its own, as Safari does; otherwise it is refused with a message advising you to export it to JPG first.

HEIC vs JPG: what’s the difference?

HEICHigh Efficiency Image Container (HEIF)

The default photo format on iPhone since iOS 11 (2017). It can be half the size of a JPG of the same quality, but Windows, many websites and plenty of apps cannot open it.

Lossy

JPGJPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

The most widely used photo format, introduced in 1992. Its lossy compression keeps files small, and it opens everywhere: phones, computers and social networks. It does not support transparency.

HEIC to JPG: frequently asked questions

Why does the JPG have fewer pixels than my original HEIC photo?

Most likely because you converted in Safari, which caps images at about 16.7 megapixels. The 24- or 48-megapixel photos from recent iPhones are then scaled down, and a message tells you so. On a computer, Chrome, Edge and Firefox go up to about 50 megapixels.

I renamed my .HEIC file to .jpg: why won’t the photo open?

Changing the extension does not change the contents: the file is still a HEIC, which many apps reject under that false name. Add it as it is: Formatomat recognises the real format from the first bytes of the file and turns it into a genuine JPG.

Are my HEIC files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default setting (90% quality) the difference is invisible to the naked eye. You can go up to 100% in the settings.

How many HEIC files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
