BMP to JPG: what to know

BMP files still turn up from old versions of Paint, dated scanning or screen-capture software, and older professional programs. The format stores every pixel uncompressed: a Full HD image in 24-bit colour weighs about 6 MB, whatever it shows. As a JPG, the same file often fits in a few hundred kilobytes.

JPG uses lossy compression: ideal for photos and scans, less so for screenshots, diagrams and drawings with crisp flat colours, where slight smudges can appear. For those, choose PNG, which is lossless and also far lighter than BMP. Reading the BMP is left to your browser; a file it cannot read is flagged with a message.

BMP vs JPG: what’s the difference?

BMPWindows bitmap

The classic Windows image format, usually uncompressed. Files are very large, so it is usually converted to JPG or PNG to save space. Formatomat writes 24-bit BMPs, which every program reads, but without transparency: transparent areas become white, and a message says so.

JPGJPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

The most widely used photo format, introduced in 1992. Its lossy compression keeps files small, and it opens everywhere: phones, computers and social networks. It does not support transparency.

BMP to JPG: frequently asked questions

Can a 256-colour or black-and-white BMP be converted?

Yes, in general: browsers read the common BMP variants, from 1 to 32 bits per pixel, compressed or not. The resulting JPG is in 24-bit colour. For a black-and-white drawing or one with few colours, PNG is the better fit, as it keeps edges perfectly crisp.

Can I make a BMP from the JPG again for an old program?

Yes: add the JPG and pick BMP as the output format. Formatomat creates 24-bit BMPs, the variant most widely accepted by older programs. The file will be heavy again, and the detail lost to JPG compression will not come back.

Are my BMP files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting BMP to JPG reduce quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default setting (90% quality) the difference is invisible to the naked eye. You can go up to 100% in the settings.

How many BMP files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
