WebP to PNG: what to know

PNG is the right choice for a WebP with a transparent background: a logo, an icon, an illustration or a cut-out product photo taken from a website. The transparency carries over as it is, soft edges included, and the image then opens in any editing or presentation app. Screenshots and diagrams benefit too, as their text goes through no further compression.

The trade-off is size: for a photo, the PNG is often several times larger than the WebP with no visible difference, so JPG is the more sensible choice there. If the image is going back onto a website, keep the original WebP; the PNG is a working copy to edit losslessly before you export the final version.

WebP vs PNG: what’s the difference?

WEBPWebP

A format created by Google in 2010 to make the web lighter. It compresses with or without loss, supports transparency and animation, and files are often 25–35% smaller than a JPG of the same quality.

PNGPortable Network Graphics

A lossless image format introduced in 1996. It keeps every pixel and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and illustrations. Photos are larger in PNG than in JPG.

WebP to PNG: frequently asked questions

How do I save a WhatsApp sticker as a PNG?

WhatsApp stickers are 512 × 512 px WebP images with a transparent background. Once the .webp file is saved on your device, add it here: the PNG keeps the transparency and works in any app. An animated sticker, however, keeps only its first frame as a PNG, and a message says so: to keep the animation, convert it to GIF instead.

Is the PNG identical to the original WebP?

To the eye, yes: the PNG reproduces the image exactly as the WebP is decoded, transparency included. If the WebP used lossy compression, any flaws it has remain visible, but the PNG adds none of its own, even after several saves.

Are my WebP files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting WebP to PNG reduce quality?

No. PNG is lossless: the image is saved pixel for pixel, exactly as it is displayed.

How many WebP files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
