SVG to PNG: what to know

You convert an SVG to PNG when the target app or website does not accept vector graphics: social networks, marketplaces, app stores. Rendering is handled by your browser’s graphics engine. Areas with no background stay transparent in the PNG. The size comes from the file’s width, height or viewBox attributes (in px, pt, mm, cm or in); a small drawing is enlarged until its longest side is 1,024 px, with no loss of sharpness since the SVG is vector-based. For another size, enter the width in the settings.

Unlike an SVG, a PNG has a fixed size and turns blurry if you enlarge it later. So export it straight at the size you will use, or at double that for high-density screens. The SVG must also be self-contained: images linked by a path or a web address are not loaded, and a message names them; scripts do not run, and an animated SVG gives a still image.

SVG vs PNG: what’s the difference?

SVGScalable Vector Graphics

A vector image format written in XML. An SVG stays sharp at any size, so it is used for logos, icons and web illustrations.

PNGPortable Network Graphics

A lossless image format introduced in 1996. It keeps every pixel and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and illustrations. Photos are larger in PNG than in JPG.

SVG to PNG: frequently asked questions

Why does the text in my SVG show up in a different font?

Text in an SVG relies on fonts, not on drawn shapes. If the font is a web font loaded from the internet, or is not installed on your device, the browser swaps in another one. In your drawing app, convert the text to outlines (or paths) before exporting the SVG.

What pixel size should I choose when converting an SVG to PNG?

The size of the final use. Enter the width in the settings: 192 or 512 px for a web app icon, 1,200 px for a social media sharing image, 32 or 48 px for a favicon. The height always follows the drawing’s proportions.

Are my SVG files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting SVG to PNG reduce quality?

No. PNG is lossless: the image is saved pixel for pixel, exactly as it is displayed.

How many SVG files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
