AVIF to PNG: what to know

Choosing PNG rather than JPG for an AVIF file makes sense in two cases: the image has a transparent background (a logo, an icon, a cut-out product taken from a website), or you want to edit it without adding loss. The PNG takes over the AVIF’s transparency unchanged, semi-transparent shadows and edges included, and then opens in any app.

Expect a much larger file: AVIF is one of the most compact formats, and a PNG of a photo can weigh ten times as much. For a simple photo to share, JPG is therefore the better fit. The PNG produced uses 8 bits per colour, the usual standard, so the extra shades of a 10- or 12-bit or HDR AVIF are not kept.

AVIF vs PNG: what’s the difference?

AVIFAV1 Image File Format

A recent image format (2019) based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses even better than WebP and supports transparency, but some apps and websites do not accept it yet.

PNGPortable Network Graphics

A lossless image format introduced in 1996. It keeps every pixel and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and illustrations. Photos are larger in PNG than in JPG.

AVIF to PNG: frequently asked questions

Can an animated AVIF become an animated PNG?

No: Formatomat does not create animated PNGs. As a PNG, only the first frame of the animation is kept, and a message says so. To keep the animation, pick GIF or WebP instead: if your browser can decode animated AVIF, every frame is carried over with its duration.

Can I turn the PNG back into AVIF after editing it?

Not with Formatomat, which reads AVIF but cannot create it. To put the edited image back on a website, convert the PNG to WebP: it keeps the transparency, stays far lighter than the PNG and displays almost everywhere.

Are my AVIF files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting AVIF to PNG reduce quality?

No. PNG is lossless: the image is saved pixel for pixel, exactly as it is displayed.

How many AVIF files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
