ODT is the native format of LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice. Converting it to .docx avoids nasty surprises for someone who works in Word, or on a job application or coursework platform that only accepts that format. Headings created with the Heading 1, Heading 2… styles, even when numbered with the list button, become Word headings, listed in the Navigation pane and usable in an automatic table of contents, and page breaks and nested lists come along too.
The text takes on a standard look, in Calibri 11: the original fonts, text colours, text sizes and line spacing are not carried over; table cell backgrounds are kept, and light text in a cell with a dark background keeps its colour. Paragraph alignment (centred, right, justified) and tab stops are kept, so amounts set on a right tab after dot leaders stay lined up. Each page does keep the size, orientation and margins of its page style, though, so a landscape page stays landscape. A picture on a line of its own is centred, with no text wrapping, and a picture placed on a line of text, in the middle of a sentence or beside the text (a logo before the company name in the header), stays there; a picture cropped, flipped or turned by any angle in LibreOffice is the same in the Word file, with its colour settings (greyscale, black and white, watermark, brightness, contrast, transparency). Code written in a fixed-width font keeps its spaces. Bullets keep their sign when it is a standard character, such as ✔ or –, or a symbol from the Symbol and Wingdings fonts (▪, ➢, ✓), and text written in those two fonts becomes the characters they display (α, Ω, ☑). Merged table cells stay merged, and a table too wide for the page is made smaller and, if it still doesn’t fit, split into successive tables that repeat the first column; a message then says so.

The Microsoft Word document format since 2007. Text stays editable, with its headings, lists, tables and images.
Yes. Footnotes and endnotes become real Word footnotes, with their numbered references. Headers and footers are carried over too, page numbers included, in roman numerals and restarting at 1 where the document asks for it; a title page in the “First Page” style stays without a header, and a chapter title in a header follows the pages. Comments, however, are not carried over, and a message says so.
Fields such as a date or an author name are replaced by the text they were showing, which is then fixed. A chapter field takes the title of the chapter it sits in. The page numbers of a table of contents are left out, since they point to the pages of the original document; a reference to a page keeps the number it showed. A message points out both. An equation is written as linear text, such as 1/2 or √2, and a chart becomes a table of its values, shown in the chart’s number format (12.5% for 0.125), under its title, preceded by its picture when the file holds a preview the browser can display; a message says so in both cases. To keep an equation typeset, export it as an image from LibreOffice and put that image in its place before converting.
No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
Content and structure (headings, lists, tables, links, images, bold, italics, underlining) are carried over, and so are headers, footers and notes, and each page keeps the size, orientation and margins of its page style. Table cell backgrounds are kept, with the light text of a cell on a dark background; fonts, other colours (text colour, highlighting, paragraph backgrounds), comments and the exact layout are not. A check then compares the words and pictures carried over with those of the document, not their layout; for a long document it compares only the beginning, and the file’s row says so. If it finds a passage or a picture missing, a message says so.
As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.
Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
