PNG to JPG: what to know

PNG is the format of screenshots on Windows, Mac and iPhone, and of many exports from design apps. For a photo or a colourful image it is heavy: as a JPG the file often becomes several times smaller, which makes it easier to email or to upload to a site with a size limit. Lowering the width in the settings makes a very large screenshot lighter still.

Two limits are worth knowing. Text and thin lines can show slight smudges around the letters, typical of JPG compression, so keep the quality high for a screenshot of a document. And the soft edges of a cut-out logo are blended into the white background: placed on a dark background later, the JPG shows a pale fringe.

PNG vs JPG: what’s the difference?

PNGPortable Network Graphics

A lossless image format introduced in 1996. It keeps every pixel and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and illustrations. Photos are larger in PNG than in JPG.

JPGJPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

The most widely used photo format, introduced in 1992. Its lossy compression keeps files small, and it opens everywhere: phones, computers and social networks. It does not support transparency.

PNG to JPG: frequently asked questions

Why is my JPG larger than the original PNG?

It happens with images made of flat colours: interface screenshots, diagrams, tables, logos. PNG compresses them very efficiently, whereas JPG, designed for photos, gains almost nothing on them. For this kind of image keep the PNG, or lower the quality if you really need a JPG.

Can I pick a background colour other than white for the JPG?

No: transparent areas are always filled with white, because JPG has no transparency channel. For another colour, add a background to the image in an editing app before converting. If the transparency must stay, WebP keeps it, often in a lighter file than the PNG.

Are my PNG files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default setting (90% quality) the difference is invisible to the naked eye. You can go up to 100% in the settings.

How many PNG files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
