PNG to ICO: what to know

Starting from a PNG is the best way to make a favicon or a Windows icon: its transparency is kept in every size inside the ICO file, so the icon blends into a light tab as well as a dark theme. The browser or Windows then picks the most suitable version, tiny in a tab, larger for a desktop shortcut.

At 16 px a detailed logo quickly becomes unreadable, so go for a simple shape, thick strokes and little text. Also crop the transparent margins around the design, which are kept as they are and make the icon look smaller. For the iPhone home screen, sites use a 180 × 180 px PNG instead (apple-touch-icon), so keep your original PNG as well.

PNG to ICO: frequently asked questions

How do I install the favicon.ico file on my website?

Rename the file favicon.ico and put it at the root of the site: browsers look for it there by default. You can also declare it in the head of your pages, with a link tag of type icon. Then clear your browser cache, which often keeps the old icon for a while.

Which icon sizes does the ICO file contain?

Always 16, 24, 32 and 48 px, then 64, 128 and 256 px if the longest side of your image reaches those values. A 100 px image therefore gives sizes from 16 to 64 px. Each size is scaled from the original, then saved losslessly.

Are my PNG files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting PNG to ICO reduce quality?

The image is resized to the standard icon sizes (16, 24, 32 and 48 px, plus 64, 128 and 256 px when it is large enough), then saved losslessly. Start from an image of at least 256 px for a crisp icon.

How many PNG files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
