AVIF to JPG: what to know

AVIF files nearly always come from a website: more and more sites and online shops serve this format to compatible browsers, and that is what you get when you save an image. As a JPG, the image becomes usable everywhere, as an attachment or in an older editing app, but the file is usually much heavier: that is the price of compatibility.

Two changes to expect. Transparent areas of an AVIF turn white, since JPG has no transparency. And an animated AVIF, which is rarer, keeps only one frame. If you plan to edit the image several times, convert it to PNG instead: JPG adds a small loss with every new save.

AVIF vs JPG: what’s the difference?

AVIFAV1 Image File Format

A recent image format (2019) based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses even better than WebP and supports transparency, but some apps and websites do not accept it yet.

JPGJPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

The most widely used photo format, introduced in 1992. Its lossy compression keeps files small, and it opens everywhere: phones, computers and social networks. It does not support transparency.

AVIF to JPG: frequently asked questions

What should I do if the “This browser cannot read AVIF” message appears?

Formatomat uses the AVIF decoder built into your browser. Update your browser, or open the page in a recent version of Chrome, Firefox or Safari. If your device no longer receives updates, do the conversion on another computer.

Does an HDR AVIF image keep its brilliance as a JPG?

Not entirely. The JPG produced is a standard image with 8 bits per colour: the HDR information and the 10- or 12-bit depth an AVIF can hold are not carried over. The brightest highlights and the most vivid colours may therefore look more subdued than in the original.

Are my AVIF files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting AVIF to JPG reduce quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default setting (90% quality) the difference is invisible to the naked eye. You can go up to 100% in the settings.

How many AVIF files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
