Markdown to PDF: what to know

Markdown is read in its GitHub flavour (GFM): on top of the basic syntax, tables, strikethrough and task lists are supported, the latter showing as [x] and [ ]. As in standard Markdown, a single line break is ignored, so leave a blank line to start a new paragraph, or end a line with two spaces to force a break. Quotes are indented, with a vertical rule beside them.

Links appear in blue and stay clickable in the PDF, but their address is not printed, so write it out if the document will be read on paper. A link to a heading of the document (#…) leads to that heading. Emoji are drawn as small pictures whose text can still be copied, and symbols such as → or ≥ are kept. An image referenced by a path or a web address is not included, since only the .md file is read: its description, when it has one, is written in its place, and a message says so. YAML front matter between two --- lines at the very start of the file is recognised: its title field becomes the document title, and its fields appear at the top of the PDF, in a table. Footnotes ([^1]) become real notes, numbered in the order of their references and gathered at the end of the document.

Markdown vs PDF: what’s the difference?

MDMarkdown

A lightweight syntax for formatted text (headings, lists, links, tables) written with plain symbols. It is widely used for notes, documentation and README files.

PDFPortable Document Format

A document format created by Adobe in 1993 and now an ISO standard. The layout looks the same on every device, which makes it the reference format for sharing, signing and printing.

Markdown to PDF: frequently asked questions

Do code blocks keep their indentation in the PDF?

Yes. A fenced (```) or indented block is set in a fixed-width font on a light grey background, with every space intact; a tab moves on to the next multiple of eight characters. There is no syntax highlighting. A block with a line wider than the page is set smaller to make it fit, down to 6 points; a line still too long at that size carries on at the next line, broken after a space or a punctuation mark, without shrinking the rest of the block.

Are LaTeX formulas typeset?

No: a formula written between $ or $$ signs is kept exactly as written, without mathematical layout, and a message says so; a price such as $5 is not taken for a formula. For a scientific document, write simple formulas straight as text, such as x² + y².

Are my Markdown files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting Markdown to PDF reduce quality?

Headings, lists, tables, quotes, links, footnotes and code blocks are laid out cleanly in standard fonts. Images referenced by a path or a web address are not included (their description, when they have one, is written in their place), and a TeX formula stays written as it is, without mathematical layout. A check then compares the words and pictures carried over with those of the document, not their layout; for a long document it compares only the beginning, and the file’s row says so. If it finds a passage or a picture missing, a message says so.

How many Markdown files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
