ODS to Excel: what to know

ODS is the LibreOffice Calc format. Converting it to XLSX lets you send it to Excel users or upload it to a platform that only accepts that format. Each sheet keeps its name and its values: numbers, dates turned into real Excel dates shown in the 2024-03-15 format (a date written in words keeps its format, as January 2026 does, unless it shows an era, a quarter or a week, which no Excel format writes: it then shows in the 2024-03-15 format, and a message names those cells), TRUE and FALSE values, and multi-line text. A sheet name Excel refuses (over 31 characters, or a forbidden character) is changed, and a message gives the old and the new name. Percentages and amounts become plain numbers, so 25% shows as 0.25 and £12.50 as 12.50, which a message points out.

Common formulas are carried over, with their last result: SUM, AVERAGE, IF, VLOOKUP, references to other sheets, named ranges and constants, array constants…, and an array formula stays an array formula. A formula that uses a function specific to LibreOffice keeps only its value, and a message gives their number. Merged cells, links and frozen rows are carried over; formatting is not, nor are charts, images, comments, drop-down lists (data validation) or conditional formatting, which a message points out. Column widths are recalculated to fit the content.

ODS to Excel: frequently asked questions

Do my times stay times in Excel?

Yes. A Calc time cell such as 10:30 becomes a real Excel time, shown as 10:30:00, and a duration of more than 24 hours keeps all its hours (36:00:00). Formulas that add or subtract them keep working. Dates stay real dates too.

Are hidden sheets in my ODS workbook converted?

Yes, and they stay hidden in the Excel file, like hidden rows and columns: every sheet is exported in order. If a sheet holds working calculations or confidential data, delete it from the workbook before converting rather than relying on it being hidden, which takes two clicks to undo.

Are my ODS files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting ODS to Excel reduce quality?

Values, numbers, dates, times and sheets are carried over, and so are common formulas with their last result and defined names. A formula specific to one program (or a reference to several sheets at once) keeps only its last value, and the conversion says so. Formatting (colours, column widths) is not carried over, but a number keeps the decimals its format shows (12.50). An XLSX or ODS workbook with a damaged essential part (a sheet, its texts, its styles) is refused, with the name of that part, and a date that does not exist (a 31 February) is kept as written, as text, which a message points out.

How many ODS files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?
