MP4MPEG-4 Part 14
The most compatible video format, played by almost every phone, computer, TV and social network.
Turn your MP4 videos into WAV files right in your browser, so your files are never uploaded to a server. How long it takes depends on the video’s length and your device.

Extracting a video’s sound as WAV is useful for editing, noise reduction, mixing a filmed podcast, transcription or sampling. The browser decodes only the soundtrack, leaving the picture untouched, then writes it as 16-bit PCM at its original sample rate, often 48 kHz in video. All its channels are kept: a mono track stays mono, and 5.1 sound keeps its six channels.
The WAV adds no further compression: the soundtrack, usually AAC, is decoded once and written out as it is, which makes it a good base for further work. If you later bring the edited sound back into your video project, line it up with the original track using the waveform. No metadata is written; only the video’s name is reused.

Uncompressed audio at full quality, used for recording and editing. One minute at CD quality weighs about 10 MB.
Yes. The WAV is written at the soundtrack’s sample rate, often 48 kHz in video, with no resampling, and at 16 bits. It therefore drops into an editing project at the same rate with no conversion; editing apps also accept different rates in one project and convert them automatically.
About 690 MB for 48 kHz stereo sound, which is just over 11 MB a minute, half that in mono and three times as much in 5.1, whatever the video’s quality. A WAV cannot exceed 4 GB, a little over 6 hours of 48 kHz stereo: beyond that, the conversion stops and the message suggests MP3 or OGG. The browser has to hold the video, the decoded sound and the WAV being written in memory, so for long videos a computer is a better bet than a phone.
No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
No. Only the audio track is extracted, and WAV stores it uncompressed. The file will be large, though.
As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.
Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
